Hey there, Junior Defenders!
I’m
Chito-Man, and today you’re going to learn how to build your very own
bioretention garden — a special kind of garden that helps
clean dirty stormwater and protect rivers, lakes, and oceans!
Follow these easy steps, and you’ll become a true Water Protector!
Step 1: Pick Your Spot!
Look for a place where rainwater collects.
It could be near a downspout, driveway, or sidewalk.
The garden needs to be low enough to catch the rain but sunny enough to help plants grow!

Step 2: Start with Big Rocks
Lay a layer of big rocks at the very bottom.
These rocks help water drain down safely so it doesn’t get stuck and muddy.
Step 3: Add a Layer of Sand
Pour sand on top of the rocks.
Sand acts like a sponge, catching dirt and tiny pieces that rainwater brings.

Step 4: Add Special Soil
Now add a layer of soil made for stormwater gardens!
This soil is light and fluffy so water can soak through easily and help the plants grow strong.
Step 5: Plant Your Helpers
Pick strong, deep-rooted plants.
Choose native flowers, grasses, and little shrubs.
They grab pollution from the water and hold the soil together so it doesn’t wash away.

Step 6: Watch the Rain Work!
When it rains, your garden will come to life!
- Water flows into the garden
- Sand and soil trap the pollution
- Plants soak up the clean water
- Cleaner water goes back to nature!
Chito-Man's Tip:
"The best gardens are full of different kinds of plants!
Mix tall grasses, colorful flowers, and strong shrubs to build a super team of water protectors!"

Congratulations, Junior Water Defender!
By building your own bioretention garden, you’ve helped clean stormwater, protect wildlife, and make
the world a healthier place.
You’re officially part of the
Stormwater Defenders!
