What is a River?
Rivers are moving highways of water that flow across our land. They start in mountains or hills and wind their way down to lakes, oceans, or other rivers. Some rivers are big and wide like the Mississippi, and others are small streams called creeks—but they all play a vital role in the environment.
Why Rivers Are So Important
Rivers are more than just water - they're lifelines for nature and people. Here's what makes them so special:
🥤 Source of Drinking Water: Many cities and towns rely on rivers for clean, drinkable water.
🐟 Home to Wildlife: Fish, turtles, birds, frogs, and insects all depend on rivers for food and shelter.
🌱 Nourishment for Land: Rivers carry nutrients that help plants and forests grow.
🧭 Pathways for Travel: People have used rivers for transportation for thousands of years.
🎣 Fun and Recreation: We love to fish, kayak, skip rocks, and explore near rivers!
How Rivers Get Polluted
When it rains, water runs off roads, sidewalks, and driveways. This stormwater flows into storm drains - those grates you see near curbs. But storm drains don't lead to a water treatment plant. They empty directly into rivers without being cleaned!
Here's what that runoff often carries:
🗑️ Trash like plastic bottles, bags, wrappers, and cigarette butts
🚗 Oil and grease from cars
🧴 Chemicals from lawn fertilizers or cleaning supplies
🌿 Leaves and grass clippings
💩 Pet waste
Even though some of these things seem small, they can cause big problems in a river ecosystem.
What Happens to Polluted Rivers?
Pollution can hurt rivers in many ways:
❌ Harm to Animals: Wildlife can get entangled in trash or eat it by mistake, leading to injury or death.
😷 Unsafe Water: Dirty water from storm drains can make rivers unsafe for swimming, fishing, or drinking.
🐟 Oxygen Depletion: When leaves, grass, or pet waste decompose in water, they use up oxygen, leaving fish gasping for air.
🌿 Disrupted Ecosystems: Extra chemicals and nutrients from fertilizer can cause algae blooms that take over rivers and kill native plants and animals.
Sergeant Stormwater's Top Tips
to Protect Rivers
Everyone can play a role in protecting our rivers - yes, even YOU!
Here's how:
🧹 Pick up trash when you see it. Every piece you grab might save an animal's life.
🐾 Scoop the poop every time you walk your pet.
🌻 Use less fertilizer and water your lawn wisely.
🧽 Wash your car at a car wash, not in the driveway.
🧠 Teach your friends and family that storm drains are only for rain!

"If you wouldn't drink it, don't let it go down the drain!"

Fun River Facts:
The Amazon River is home to pink dolphins!
Rivers help shape land by slowly carving valleys and canyons over time.
Some fish, like salmon, swim upstream to return to where they were born.
Remember...
Rivers connect everything - from your sidewalk to the sea.
By keeping storm drains clean, you're helping rivers stay beautiful, healthy, and full of life.
